Fresh-Faced Confidence

Facelift in Vancouver with Dr. Valenzuela

Facial aging can change the way your face reflects how you feel. Sagging skin, deep facial creases, loose skin along the jawline, and a less defined neck may develop even when you still feel energetic and confident. Facelift surgery can reposition descended tissues, remove excess skin, and restore more balanced contours across the face and neck.

Dr. Dianne Valenzuela is a fellowship-trained Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon in Vancouver. Her approach begins with careful listening and facial analysis to bring you natural results that preserve your identity.

Meet The Modern Facelift

What is a Facelift?

A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that improves visible signs of aging in the cheeks, lower face, jawline, and, when included in the treatment plan, the neck. Modern facelift surgery addresses more than facial skin. It also repositions selected deeper tissues and underlying muscles before the skin is gently redraped.

This structural approach may soften jowls, nasolabial folds, deep wrinkles, and the transition between the jaw and neck. It does not stop the natural aging process or treat every facial wrinkle. Fine lines, sun damage, pigmentation, and volume loss may require other treatments.

The Signs Worth Noticing

What Concerns Can Facelift Surgery Treat?

When considering a Facelift Vancouver patients that visit us can expect to improve:

  • Sagging skin through the cheeks and lower face
  • Jowls and reduced jawline definition
  • Loose skin along the face and upper neck
  • Deep facial creases and nasolabial folds
  • Descended fat and other telltale signs of facial aging
  • A tired appearance that does not reflect how you feel

The Upside Of A Lift

Benefits of Facelift Surgery

Facelift surgery can create meaningful, long-lasting facial rejuvenation by addressing sagging skin and the deeper tissues that change with age. Each procedure is tailored to the patient’s anatomy, allowing Dr. Valenzuela to restore support while preserving natural facial movement and expression.

Potential benefits of a facelift include:

  • Smoother cheek contours: Repositioning descended tissues can restore a more balanced shape through the mid and lower face.
  • Reduced jowls: Lifting the underlying tissues can create a cleaner, better-defined jawline.
  • Less loose skin: Excess facial skin is carefully removed after the deeper layers have been repositioned.
  • Softer facial creases: A facelift may reduce deep nasolabial folds and other lines caused by tissue descent.
  • Improved face-and-neck balance: When combined with a neck lift, surgery can create a smoother transition from the jawline to the neck.
  • Natural-looking results: Thoughtful tissue repositioning and conservative skin redraping help avoid an overly tight appearance.
  • Long-lasting improvement: Results can remain visible for many years, although the natural aging process continues.
  • A personalized approach: Facelift surgery can be adapted to different facial structures, stages of aging, and aesthetic goals.

A facelift may also be combined with blepharoplasty, brow lift surgery, fat grafting, or skin resurfacing when other areas contribute to the patient’s concerns. During your consultation, Dr. Valenzuela will explain which benefits are realistic for you and whether a facelift alone or a combined treatment plan offers the most balanced result.

One Goal, Different Paths

Types of Facelift Surgery

There is no single technique that suits every patient. Dr. Valenzuela selects an approach according to skin quality, tissue position, facial structure, previous procedures, and your goals.

Traditional Facelift

A traditional facelift may treat moderate to advanced sagging skin, jowls, and lower-face laxity. Incisions generally follow the hairline and contours around the ears. The deeper layers are repositioned, the skin is redraped, and excess skin is removed. Neck lift surgery may be added when needed.

Mini Facelift

A mini facelift uses a shorter incision and more limited approach. It may suit younger patients or others with early jowling and mild laxity. Although it may involve less downtime, it cannot provide the same correction when substantial sagging is present. Candidacy depends on anatomy, not age alone.

Deep Plane Facelift

A deep plane facelift works beneath the superficial supportive layer, allowing selected deeper tissues to be repositioned together. It may improve the cheeks, jowls, and jawline without relying on skin tension. It is not automatically better for every patient; optimal outcomes depend on choosing the appropriate technique.

Lift, Fill, Or Tighten?

Facelift vs. Non-Surgical Treatments

Non-surgical treatments can be useful, but they do not accomplish the same work as facelift surgery.

Treatment Best Suited For Main Limitation
Facelift Moderate to advanced tissue laxity, jowls, and excess skin Requires surgery and recovery time
Dermal fillers or fat grafting Facial volume loss and selected contour concerns Add volume but do not remove loose skin
Botox Wrinkles caused by repeated facial movement Does not lift jowls or sagging neck tissue
RF, ultrasound, or other skin-tightening treatments Mild laxity or skin-quality concerns Produce more limited tightening than surgery

A non-surgical option may be reasonable for mild concerns or for someone who is not ready for an operation. A facelift may be more appropriate when deeper tissues have descended and repeated dermal fillers no longer address the underlying concern. Surgery and non-surgical treatments can also complement one another when each is used for the problem it treats best.

When The Timing Feels Right

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Facelift?

Ideal candidates are generally in good overall health, avoid nicotine, and have realistic expectations. Most patients have visible jowls, loose lower-face skin, deep facial creases, or reduced jawline definition. Patients may be in their 40s through 70s, but there is no ideal age.

A history of poor scarring, medical conditions that affect healing, previous facial surgery, or earlier injectable and energy-based treatments should be discussed during consultation. Dr. Valenzuela will determine whether a facelift, mini facelift, neck lift, or non-surgical treatment is appropriate.

Before The Lift Begins

What Happens During a Facelift Consultation?

Dr. Valenzuela will review your medical history, medications, previous procedures, and goals. She will examine your skin, facial structure, hairline, deeper tissues, and the relationship between your face and neck. Photographs may be taken for treatment planning.

Your consultation covers incision placement, preparation, anesthesia, recovery time, potential risks, and realistic outcomes. It is an opportunity to ask questions without pressure.

The Art Behind The Lift

How Is Facelift Surgery Performed?

At our practice in Vancouver Facelift surgery is typically an outpatient procedure performed with general anesthesia or intravenous sedation, depending on the treatment plan. Incisions are placed near the hairline and around the natural contours of the ears. A shorter incision may be used for a limited procedure, while an additional incision beneath the chin may be needed for neck lift surgery.

Dr. Valenzuela lifts and repositions the selected deeper layers, adjusts fat when appropriate, and removes excess skin. The remaining skin is redraped without excessive tension, and the incisions are carefully closed. After surgery, patients are monitored in the recovery area before leaving with an approved adult caregiver.

Rest, Heal, Reveal

What Is Facelift Recovery Like?

During the first week, swelling, bruising, tightness, numbness, and mild discomfort are expected. Mild bruising may begin fading within one to two weeks, although every patient heals differently. Dressings or temporary drains may be used, and follow-up visits allow Dr. Valenzuela to monitor the incisions.

Most patients need approximately two weeks away from public-facing work and social plans. Makeup can be resumed only after the incisions have closed sufficiently and Dr. Valenzuela provides clearance. Heavy lifting and strenuous exercise are restricted for several weeks.

Visible swelling improves gradually, but residual firmness, numbness, and incision redness can take longer to settle. Scars mature over many months. Following the postoperative plan is important to achieve optimal outcomes.

The Reveal And Realities

Facelift Results, Scars, and Risks

As swelling subsides, patients may notice smoother lower-face contours, reduced jowls, and clearer jawline definition. The aim is a youthful appearance that remains natural—not a tight or unfamiliar face. Results can last many years, although the aging process continues.

All facial surgery leaves scars. Facelift incisions are designed to blend with the hairline and contours of the ear, helping limit visible scarring once healed. Genetics, sun exposure, nicotine, and aftercare can affect scar quality.

Potential risks include bleeding, hematoma, infection, fluid accumulation, poor wound healing, unfavorable scars, hair loss near an incision, altered sensation, facial nerve weakness, asymmetry, anesthesia complications, and the possible need for revision surgery. Choosing a skilled surgeon and following all instructions can reduce risk, but complications cannot be eliminated.

Better Together, Beautifully Planned

Can a Facelift Be Combined With Other Procedures?

Yes. Depending on your concerns, a facelift may be combined with neck lift surgery, blepharoplasty, brow lift, laser resurfacing, rhinoplasty, or fat grafting. Combining other procedures can create more balanced facial rejuvenation, but it also increases surgical time and may affect recovery. Dr. Valenzuela will determine whether a combined or staged plan is more appropriate.

Facelift Frequently Asked Questions

Not always. A facelift primarily addresses the cheeks, jowls, and lower face. A neck lift treats loose neck skin, muscle bands, or fullness beneath the chin. Many patients benefit from combining them, but the plan depends on anatomy.

No responsible surgeon can promise a number. The goal is to improve facial contours and help you look rested while preserving your identity.

Scars are permanent but are positioned around the hairline and ears so they can become less noticeable as they mature. Healing varies between patients.

Results can remain visible for many years, but surgery does not stop aging. Sun protection, stable weight, avoiding nicotine, and a healthy lifestyle may help support the result.

Many patients resume non-strenuous work and social activities after about two weeks. Exercise and heavy lifting generally require a longer pause. Dr. Valenzuela will provide a personalized timeline.
